On a visit to the cinema in 1995, I saw a film that, unexpectedly, moved me deeply. The film was The Bridges of Madison County, Clint Eastwood's Hollywood adaptation of Robert Waller's successful novel. I was overwhelmed by the intensity of my emotional response to the film, and by the pleasure I experienced from watching it. I was also surprised by the vehement remarks of two women sitting behind me in the cinema that evening, who clearly had not enjoyed the film. My experience of watching the film-my own pleasure, and the overheard dis-pleasure of the women behind me-led me to consider the complexities of women's cinematic pleasure. How can different women have such diverse reactions to the same film? Why are some women caught up in a film's embrace, while others struggle to experience pleasure from it? My questions swirl around notions of how women experience pleasure from watching mainstream narrative film which is constructed through a patriarchal gaze.
