These 157 never-before-published letters were written by Rachel O'Connor of Evergreen Plantation in the Feliciana country of Louisiana to her brother David Weeks and his family at their home, Shadows-on-the-Teche, in the bayou country. They span a period of twenty-two years, providing valuable information on early plantation life, society, and economics. Rachel was born in 1774 at a time of great change in America. The customs of the French and Spanish frontier were being replaced by the lifestyle of the Anglo-Saxon settlers who quickly established the grand manner characteristic of the antebellum South. Rachel had ties to both worlds, the pioneer log cabins and the columned mansions. A woman planter in a man's world, she allows her readers to share her view of slavery in all its ramifications without a hint of later controversy. Rachel discusses frankly the immorality of overseers, slave concubinage, and slave discipline, revealing her own paternalistic attitude toward slaveholding. Her letters also discuss epidemics, the weather, her neighbors, her crops and gardens, and always her struggle against lawsuits and debts. The book contains a historical introduction to the period, a genealogical chart of Rachel's family, and a "Who's Who" of important persons mentioned in the letters. Explanatory annotations and editorial notes provide information relative to persons and events. Maps and sketches orient the setting of Rachel's world. A concluding summary traces the descendants of her relatives and friends, and describes the site of Evergreen Plantation as it exists today.

Your company would not be where it’s at today without your loyal customers. And yet how much time is spent toward improving and increasing value among your steady core versus the time--and money!--spent on obtaining new leads, getting through closed doors, and eventually realizing you’ve been beating a dead horse that is not going to win any races for you? Why do so many companies take valuable time and resources away from focusing on their heartbeat and go off on mad pursuits of hypotheticals that have already proven to have a remarkably low ROI?Evergreen exposes this nonsensical chase for what it is: a brief spike in metrics and an ongoing revenue drain, as one-time customers fail to return. It then proposes that the better solution is to shift resources from attracting new customers to engaging the base--every company’s path to stable growth, season after season. The entertaining stories and action steps weaved throughout these pages reveal how anyone can: • Cultivate the 3Cs of evergreen companies: character, community, and content• Build loyalty programs that turn satisfied customers into enthusiastic advocates• Nurture profitable customers while pruning those who sap time and money• Inject authenticity into social media communications• Invert the expectations gap that can drive customers awayNo matter the business--whether it is a tech software giant or a mom-and-pop laundromat, customer retention is the key to sustaining success. Evergreen will help you turn satisfied customers into enthusiastic advocates and steady profits.

It’s 1901—a brave new century—and seventeen-year-old Grace Boisvert thinks it’s high time to forget that she’s a dryad; being able to talk to trees just doesn’t seem very useful in the automobile age. A little hair dye to touch up her green roots, and she’s off to join her best friend Alice Roosevelt for a visit to glamorous Newport, RI, with her family’s warnings not to fall for any human boys ringing in her ears. As it happens, the only interesting boy in Newport, Kit Rookwood, clearly prefers Alice to her. But that changes when he and his family unexpectedly follow them to a secluded Adirondack camp to join Alice’s family. Grace finds herself falling in love—and not just with the breathtaking forests. But sometimes stern family warnings really should be heeded and ancient magical heritages not forgotten, especially when it turns out that not everything—and everyone—are quite what they seem...

This selection from the first ten years of the Evergreen Review gives the full flavor of the energy, savvy, excitement, and gall that characterized the magazine during the days of its publication. It also happens to bring together some of the world’s best writers in one volume, in the company of their peers. Evergreen was more than another literary magazine. Founded by Barney Rossett of Grove Press and publishing from 1957 through 1973 (it now exists as an online only magazine), it was the voice of a movement that helped to change the attitudes and prejudices of the culture at large through the language of art—and succeeded. It was always damn the torpedoes and full speed ahead. Here are original short stories by Samuel Beckett and Jack Kerouac (with his “October in the Railroad Earth” predating the publication of On the Road); Allen Ginsberg’s “Howl” (previously published only as a pamphlet); a selection from Lawrence Ferlinghetti’s A Coney Island of the Mind; and a passage from Alexander Trocchi’s Cain’s Book. Also included are a fantastic sample of the original and iconic magazine covers which were works of art themselves—a heavily bearded Ginsberg cavorting in a sport coat and Uncle Sam top hat in 1966—and several reprinted comic strips; notably, Michael O’Donoghue’s “The Adventure of Phoebe Zeit-geist.”
