Harold Bell Wright’s timeless tale of a young minister and his wayward flock—in a new edition edited by an acclaimed Christian author. First published in 1909, The Calling of Dan Matthews tells the story of a young minister’s coming of age and the challenges he faces as he doggedly seeks to answer God’s call. Growing up in the Ozark Mountains, Dan Matthews is deeply devoted to his faith. But when he accepts a post in the Midwestern town of Corinth, he discovers a parish mired in resentment, politics, and hidden agendas. While some troubles stem from well-intentioned but misguided individuals, others are caused by selfish and evil motives. Is it any wonder that the town’s beautiful young nurse has no desire to join such a church? Now more than ever, Dan must trust in God’s wisdom and grace as he seeks to lead in the spirit of true loving kindness. A Higher Call is a compelling drama that challenges readers to think critically about the modern church.

THE INTERNATIONAL BESTSELLER: “Beautifully told.”—CNN • “A remarkable story...worth retelling and celebrating.”—USA Today • “Oh, it’s a good one!”—Fox News A “beautiful story of a brotherhood between enemies” emerges from the horrors of World War II in this New York Times bestseller by the author of Spearhead. December, 1943: A badly damaged American bomber struggles to fly over wartime Germany. At the controls is twenty-one-year-old Second Lieutenant Charlie Brown. Half his crew lay wounded or dead on this, their first mission. Suddenly, a Messerschmitt fighter pulls up on the bomber’s tail. The pilot is German ace Franz Stigler—and he can destroy the young American crew with the squeeze of a trigger... What happened next would defy imagination and later be called “the most incredible encounter between enemies in World War II.” The U.S. 8th Air Force would later classify what happened between them as “top secret.” It was an act that Franz could never mention for fear of facing a firing squad. It was the encounter that would haunt both Charlie and Franz for forty years until, as old men, they would search the world for each other, a last mission that could change their lives forever.

An exuberant autobiography that began with a fist fight at a get acquainted dance, then on to an adventurous path, cluttered with pot holes and uncertainty that took me beyond what I could ever imagine. Ultimately, it’s about how you will be remembered: is it your notable accomplishments or the values associated with who you were? Re-visiting my life as a congressman, I began to realize this could be the inkwell that I’d dip my quill into as I shared how becoming a Christian, plus the influence of notable leaders and plenty of serendipity that helped shaped my public persona. It was a reminder about the importance of the higher standard in serving the public interest, obviously lacking in today’s political culture. During my fourteen years in Congress, I witnessed first-hand the civility and trust among the leadership of both political parties that trickled down to the committee rooms and in the House Chamber that lead to notable accomplishments. My own achievements on international trade, human rights, preserving our natural resources happened only because of bipartisan support. Not so today. In the Halls of Congress and beyond (social media), it is more about radical partisanship and the special interests that reigns amok over our political system--a traumatized Congress, verifying what we don’t want to hear: this is democracy at its worst. Hopefully my book is revealing of democracy in its best form. For those of faith who serve in elective office, there is plenty of scrutiny, as I experienced as a Democrat. Whether it’s your adversaries, the skeptical media, or even supporters, there are lingering questions about who you are. Your moral fiber is always on the line, although some political figures manage to twist and slide and escape the judgment that they merit. And others get squarely called out and dragged before the court of public scrutiny. Hopefully, A Higher Calling well serve as a moral compass for others who must cope with their own challenges. My good fortune was a select number of political leaders, whose integrity and moral courage had an influence on my personal and political life that I did not fully appreciate until writing this book. A few were men of faith and others were guided by a moral compass, embracing higher standards that put the national interest first and foremost. Their actions for the common good over political and material self-interest showed me the right way. The act of re-living one’s past was revealing of how the episodes and intrigue captured the essence who I was and to solidify the inevitable question: why am I here? That line of inquiry led me to a rather creative epiphany: it wasn’t so much a memoir that I was prepared to write, but a call to action that made a big difference and has inspired me to share with others.

This book is about my life: the struggles, trials and tribulations of a cancer patient. This book is also about my family and their trials and tribulations. I have been through 31 surgeries and still counting. I have lost two kidneys, bladder, ureters, urethra, female organs and now a lung. I am told by every doctor that sees me that there is no way that I should be alive. This book has been a cleansing for me. I wrote it because everyone told me I should write a book because it would inspire cancer patients and it was so unbelievable. There are many people in my life that have inspired me to carry on. I think that I have a knack for turning lemons into lemonade. Never let things get you down. There are always people out there that have it worse than you do. I always try to pick myself up and carry on. There are many people that need me out there and I need them as well. Last but not least, I am slowly learning to listen to God not just hear him. I hope that in these pages you will find solace.

“If anyone would come after me let him deny himself, take up the cross, and follow me.” (MATTHEW 16:24) There is a path that God has set for your life––a path that will allow you to be shaped and fashioned unto the measure of the statue of the fullness of Christ (Ephesians 4:13). It is up to you alone to decide to turn from your previous path, take up the cross, and walk with Him. Elder Shannon Fitzgerald Thomas used to lean on his own understanding and seek the pleasures of the physical world. But then God illuminated his true purpose: to share the good news and spread the gospel to all His people. God made his purpose clear and guided him from his former life of sin and showed him into the way of His light. He now presses toward the mark for the High Calling of God in Christ Jesus (Philippians 3:14). You too have a path set before you; you can walk with Christ and live in truth and goodness. In A Higher Calling: Moving Forward in Your Walk With God, Elder Shannon Fitzgerald Thomas reveals the guidance God has instilled in him to share with the world so that all of God’s children might once again hear His voice and continue their walk with Him. He is waiting for you; follow Him.

Adjusting to God¡¦s High Calling is about God¡¦s desire, intentions and interactions with the humans, which He intended from time immemorial. It is a call to the Divine realms of higher living in Christ Jesus. It explains that within the Divine purpose, God¡¦s desire is the flowing forth of His life into and through His people, but which can be hindered. It also points out that true Christianity is presently being inundated in the human traditions and philosophies within the religious sector, turning it into many things it is not. The book posits it is simply God¡¦s dynamically balanced life of grace in the Spirit, lived in oneness with the reigning Lord. True Christianity, therefore „` Is not constant prideful protestations, arguments and hatred among its various constituencies over their points of belief „` Is not intellectualism; theological or otherwise, though it is not against either „` Is not emotionalism based solely on people¡¦s experiences, though it is not against emotional expression „` Is neither simply knowing nor subscribing to the right doctrines „` Is not all grace or love alone Adjusting to God¡¦s High Calling discusses these and other factors in the following phases: „` The Divine Importunity for the Call „` The Divine Intentions of the Call „` The Divine Interactions within the Call It will clarify God¡¦s purpose for your life, moving you to do everything with love.
